Nothing’s ever more than a few steps away in this unmistakable purple cottage in North Portland. The single-level building makes an “L” with the kitchen and living room in one leg and a bedroom and bathroom in the other. They enclose a large wooden exterior deck that’s accessible from both. It’s a simple, uncluttered layout that’s easy to get around and easy to like. Ceilings, floors, and the living room end wall are knotty pine, but the whiteness of the other walls combines with skylights and large windows to make the place a lot brighter than most houses with so much wood inside. It’s also well equipped, with a full-size refrigerator, gas stove and dishwasher in the kitchen, a big flat screen TV in the living room, and a claw-foot bathtub in the bathroom.
