Father & Daughter Team Up To Create The “Weehouse”

When you hear “wee”, you think small and you think Scotland, and you’re not wrong here. This one-bedroom model from The Wee House Company is indeed located in East Ayrshire, Scotland, and comes in at a modest 430 square feet. The company is headed by the father-and-daughter team of Ian and Jennifer Hope, who say that their aim is to combine classic architectural design with modern energy-efficient construction techniques and materials.

That being so, neither the silhouette nor the floor plan hold many surprises; it’s a simple, comfortable, functional house that wouldn’t have looked out of place 50 years ago. The advanced features are mostly hidden beneath the surface, such as the well-insulated building envelope that makes the house suitable for year-round living with utility bills averaging around $50 a month. This is the company’s midsize model, which goes for £75,000 ($118,000); they also offer a studio (260 square feet, £68,000/$107,000) and a two-bedroom unit (730 square feet, £99,000/$156,000). It’s on display at the Knockroon housing development, a green, mixed-use community backed by Prince Charles.
