Couple Builds Their First Tiny House

It’s less than a year old, but this tiny trailer home in Reno, Nevada, is already famous – it was featured in Jeremy Beasley’s tiny house documentary Small is Beautiful – and already for sale. The owners, Mitchell Mast and Nicholette Codding, spent about 14 months building the 230-square-foot place, in part because they wanted “to be free of the chains of debt”, and the $65,000 they expect to get for it should go a long way toward helping them achieve that goal.

Then again, they call it their first tiny house, so perhaps a second is in the works? This one is built on an 8′ x 20′ trailer with a very high arched metal roof for a spacious feel and ample headroom in the sleeping loft. Three inches of R21 insulation swaddle the floor, ceiling and walls, windows are double-paned and argon-filled, and weatherproofing is topnotch Tyvek. Exterior siding is board-and-batten type western red cedar, interior walls are pine, and floors are white maple. Fully set up with plumbing and electrical wiring, the trailer is complete with a small kitchen and a bathroom with a gorgeous wine-barrel shower and some nice hexagonal tiling on the floor.
